ETH/BTC ratio: definition

The ETH/BTC ratio shows how many bitcoins one ether is worth. It measures Ethereum's strength against Bitcoin.

Definition

If ether is worth $2,400 and bitcoin $80,000, the ETH/BTC ratio is 0.03. When it rises, Ethereum is doing better than Bitcoin, even if both fall in dollars.

Why track ratios

An altcoin up 20% while Bitcoin is up 30% has actually lost ground. The ratio against BTC is the best filter to know whether a token is worth holding rather than Bitcoin itself.

Frequently asked questions

Does the ETH/BTC ratio signal altseason?

A sustained rise in ETH/BTC often comes before the rotation into other altcoins, but it's not an absolute rule.
